The Museum of the City of New York, located on Museum Mile in New York City,
announces two paid summer internships: Development Internship, and a
Curatorial and Collections Internship. To apply please fax a cover letter and
resume, no later than May 10, to: Internship Coordinator, Museum of the City
of New York; fax, 212-369-8449.

               Development Internship Description

Hours: 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday
Dates: June 12 through August 11, 2000
Description of Duties: The Intern will research funding opportunities (grants,
corporate gifts), and assist in writing grants, for New York City History Day,

be given to the Museum's Deputy Directory for Learning and the Development
Director. The Intern will also learn to write at least one grant. The
Intern's work is intended to result in the Museum acquiring sufficient funding
to expand the program. Note: History Day, now in its eleventh year, is a
historical research program for secondary school students citywide. Working
individually or in groups of 2 - 5, students conduct primary source research;
they use it to create historical papers, documentaries, performances and
exhibitions. Their efforts are displayed at an annual event in March.

Qualifications:
A. Students must be enrolled as full time students and be entering their
sophomore, junior or senior year as candidates for an undergraduate degree.
B. Experience in the arts or museums is not required.
C. Students must demonstrate financial need and qualify for Federal
Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG) or have Effective Family
Contributions (EFC) of less than $4,001. See your school's financial aid
officer for details.
E. Students must be a New York City resident, or attend a college or
university in New York City.

            Curatorial and Collections Internship Description

Hours: 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday
Dates: June 12 through August 11, 2000
Description of Duties: The Intern will work on the preservation and access
project for the Look Collection. The Look Collection comprises the negatives,
color transparencies and contact sheets from the New York-centered
photographic essays featured in Look Magazine during the period 1941 to 1958.
The material is currently housed in acidic envelopes and only a general card
catalogue exists for subject access. As a result, the Museum is embarking on
a preservation and access project for the Collection. The goals are to move
the objects into appropriate housing (e.g. transparent mylar sleeves),
catalogue the intellectual content of the images into the Museum database,
Argus, digitize selected images for attachment to the Argus catalogue record.
Besides working on these immediate goals, the intern will write a report
concerning the potential value of the Collection to researchers, and possible
exhibitions to be developed from the Collection. Research to write the above
report should include an assessment of Look's place in the history of
photojournalism and biographical information about the photographers.
