I don't mean to be sarcastic, but museums are for visitors, right?  We exist
to serve the public.

Lots of museums are closed to the public on Sundays and Mondays.  It seems
there is a point of compromise between you and your board if you follow that
logic.  Perhaps there will be few visitors to interrupt your other work on
the extra day you're open.
