About context aware tour systems- one thing I have heard about current
GPS systems is that they are not reliable indoors, or rather,
potentially, deep indoors where radio signals from the satellites may
not be able to bounce around and snap onto the unit to keep a constant
signal, Whereas outdoors big floors of concrete and few windows may not
be an issue. Other options would be using wireless or bluetooth with
PDAs equipped for these, which could be managed from a
central point it would seem, less so infrared as it requires a
directional connection it seems.

Egyptian History Goes Digital // interesting comparison...

machine,0,4729400.story?coll=sns-ap-world-headlines>

'The digital guide, renting for about $3.30, uses IBM technology to
provide information in Arabic, English and French on 160 of the most
significant items among the 170,000 exhibits.' .. 'It offers nine tours
ranging from 30 to 110 minutes, complete with maps to navigate through
"Treasures of Tutankhamun," "Art of the Old and Middle Kingdoms" or
"Egyptians at Play." The visitor can also choose the "Explore on Your
Own" option and wander through the sprawling halls, entering an
artifact's number into the guide to hear its history and importance.'
... 'The digital guide does not even try for the human element. It
speaks in a computerized monotone, its information loads slowly and its
maps can be confusing.'
