I wouldn't do a tourist visa for this.  Not only is it illegal, but if you 
are considering working while you are in school there, you cannot do so with 
a tourist visa.  You will need a student visa for any kind of paid work and 
I think you also need it to be eligible for the National Health Service.  If 
you have already received an unconditional offer to attend your UK 
university, then you should be receiving information from them regarding 
requirements for entering the country, including proof of housing and 
funding.  As for scholarships, there are few available to US students, but I 
would suggest checking with the International Affairs office at your new 
university (some schools have their own scholarships) and with the 
government's international student site (http://www.ukcosa.org.uk/).  The 
international student site has everything from finances to scholarships to 
entrance requirements.  It is an excellent resource.
