Hancock Shaker Village is pleased to announce a call for papers for the 2002
Shaker Seminar, scheduled for July 21-26, 2002, at Enfield Shaker Village and
Canterbury Shaker Village, New Hampshire.

The Seminar is in its 28th year, a "moveable feast" that visits the sites of
former Shaker villages and history museums with Shaker collections. The
Seminar's mission is to share new insights in Shaker studies and encourage
dialogue between scholars, collectors, and persons interested in the study of
American communal sects and religious studies, material culture, gender
studies, music, and museum studies related to Shaker history. This call for
papers and registration for the Shaker Seminar are open to all interested
persons. Partial scholarships for Seminar registration are available to
graduate and undergraduate students.

For the 2002 Shaker Seminar, we are especially interested in presentations
that focus on the Canterbury and Enfield, New Hampshire communities. Papers
addressing broader Shaker studies will also be considered.

Presentations should be 30 - 60 minutes and take one of three formats:

* Lecture or Illustrated Lecture: a single presenter shares information on a
topic with or without related slides.

* Panel Discussion: more than one speaker discusses a topic, often with
contrasting perspectives. Each panel must have a chairperson who is
responsible for organizing and managing the panel.

* Workshop: presenter(s) teach special skills in a small group(15-25)
setting. Workshops should include appropriate materials. Length can be from
one to eight hours (with breaks).

The Hancock Shaker Village Seminar Committee will assign all session times
and dates. We will try to honor requests for specific dates and/or times when
possible. Presenters are encouraged to register for the full Seminar. An
honorarium or discounted registration fee is offered to all presenters.

Proposals should include a 125-word typed abstract of the session, title,
length of session, and complete name and appropriate contact information of
presenter. Deadline for submitting proposals is March 15, 2002. Send to:
Seminar Committee, Hancock Shaker Village, PO Box 927, Pittsfield, MA 01202
.
