I agree.  I just spoke to a paper conservator.  Can you recommend one?

There are numerous factors that have not been discussed in exhibiting
this map.  Length of exhibition, environmental conditions, light levels,
inherent problems, previous treatments, etc.  All recommendation
mentioned so far could have their negative effects on the artifact
depending on it's condition & construction.  I would not recommend that
this map be exhibited until you at least have a qualified paper
conservator examine it and offer recommendations in all these areas.  It
sounds like a significant piece & it would be a shame to damage it
unduely.

I believe that people come to museums to see the real things, not the
copy of the real thing that too many are using.  It's a protection
issue: can you display it, present it, and protect it without
compromise? If so, use the original, if not, use a copy.
