POSITION AVAILABLE:  School Program Guide

FLSA CLASSIFICATION:  Part-time, Non-exempt

DEPARTMENT:  Education

General Summary:  
School-Program Guides lead school-age children (PreK - 8th grade) on nature discovery tours through the Arboretum's woodlands, wetlands, and prairie.   Using engaging interpretive techniques and following tour concept outlines, guides help children discover basic concepts related to plant and animal diversity, photosynthesis, food webs, nutrient cycles, species identification, and human influences on various ecosystems.

Job Qualifications
Previous Training and Experience
Minimum of one year training and experience teaching children or adults in structured or informal educational programs.  Coursework and/or teaching/interpreting experience in some or all of the following: ecology (woodland, wetland, prairie, etc.), photosynthesis, diversity of life, food webs, species identification, nutrient cycles, impact of humans on different ecosystems, child development, and teaching methods.

Physical/Mental Requirements
Participate in core classes offered through the Arboretum Certificate Programs.  Become certified in first aid and CPR classes offered at the Arboretum.  Possess above average verbal skills, as well as the ability to project excitement about learning and nature to youth audiences.  Demonstrate maturity and sound judgment in managing groups of children.  Maintain a flexible, constructive, courteous approach to teachers, children, and fellow guides.  Must have stamina and ability to walk up to one mile on paved, wood-chipped, or dirt paths over varied and uneven terrain.

Available for school tours four days per week from 9 am -2 pm in the spring (April 1 to mid-June) and in the fall (September 1 to mid-November), and one to two days per week during the off-season (December to March, July, and August).  Must be available at least two days per week (including one weekend day per month) for scout group tours in the spring and fall. Must be available three days per month (including one weekend day per month) for scout group tours in the winter and summer. Scout group tours are 1.5 hours long.  Attend monthly training sessions and seminars to increase interpretation skills and content knowledge.

Working Conditions
·	Guided tours, which take place entirely outdoors, can necessitate working in marginal weather conditions (rain, cold, wind, and heat).
·	Position requires physical activity: walking on uneven terrain, lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds, bending, climbing, standing, hiking, and kneeling.
