I just flew in late last night after 3 weeks away.
I've been perusing some part of the list, but admit to
not reading everything since I was picking up a good
chunk of it on the cell phone. I see we have had yet
another flame war having to do with new people getting
on the Museum-L merry go round and asking the same
questions other riders have asked and or seen asked
many times before. Even that kind of a discussion is,
by no means, new.

I don't know if it's been suggested, but in case it
has not, it just seemed logical to me when I was away
that much of this could be solved by the creation of a
common questions FAQ (which is what a FAQ is, but not
always). If members want the same old questions to
not appear with such frequency, and there were a
reference when one signed on to first read and save
the link to this FAQ, a lot of the redundancy might be
avoided.

It never ceases to amaze me how few people know where
the delete key is on their puter and how to use it.
Reading on the cell for the greater part of 3 weeks
gave me a newfound appreciation of those who have to
access the list by dialup. So I can understand how it
can be a problem, but a few with restrictions should
not dictate what a majority can do. If you don't like
a thread, if you don't like an authority, if you're
just a grumpy old b*st*rd that day, for God's sake,
use your delete key.

I consider this list to be pretty sacrosanct. A
nonmuseum professional, I learn oodles all the time
and amazed at what many of you know. I'm also often
amazed that some of you don't know the benefit of good
manners. It's not nice to chase of newbies or to
inhibit them from asking what they need to know when
they are in the position that once you were. Instead
of being a know it all, why not help to contribute to
such a FAQ, and if John can't or won't append it to
the list's FAQ, I can create a Yahoogroup to put it on
and you guys are welcome to add to it and make
reference when these kinds of questions arise.

One of the issues that comes up with regularity is
software. Now, it does make some sense to revisit
this topic at least once a year because new software
programs are created all the time, so that this part
of a FAQ might need to be revised, but it would be
good to include it as well.

I'm amused to see that, like questions that recur with
some regularity, the flame wars are unceasing too.

If you want to bat around the idea of a FAQ and need a
group to input your expertise to help the neophytes,
holler, and I will do what I can to give you a venue.
Searching is not always the easiest way to get your
answers from a list serve.

Let me know.
