Do you Yahoo? It'll cost you-hoo

Firm to charge for e-mail, previously free services

By Bloomberg News
March 23, 2002
Yahoo! Inc., owner of the third-most-used e-mail
system in the United States, will begin charging for
previously free services that let customers download
or automatically forward e-mail.

Yahoo said it will charge $19.99 a month for e-mail
accounts in which users can download e-mail to delete
or respond to while not connected to the Internet. The
accounts also allow users to automatically forward
e-mail. The fee will rise to $29.99 a month April 24,
according to an e-mail sent to customers on Wednesday.

Chief Executive Terry Semel is charging users of
Yahoo's network of Web sites for more services after
advertising sales declined last year. In the past
three months, Yahoo began charging for a research
service and for new features on its GeoCities service,
which lets users design their own Web sites.

"My guess is, they're going to throw a lot of stuff
against the wall and see where they have pricing power
and where they don't," said Paul Cook, who manages $2
billion in technology stocks at Munder Capital
Management Inc. "They might scare some people off who
are used to free e-mail services."

Yahoo Mail had 26.3 million users last month,
according to research firm Jupiter Media Metrix Inc.
The e-mail system on AOL Time Warner Inc.'s America
Online Internet service had 37.6 million users, and
Microsoft Corp.'s MSN Hotmail had 34.5 million.
