Today begins our first in a series of requests for a
mentor.

I'm taking the easy way out on this one. It came to
me so complete, that I don't have to do much
augmentation. Mia's well thought out request should
stand by itself.

Please consider stepping forward and connecting with
Mia privately. It could be the greatest gift you give
yourself!

MEET MIA BRUCH

I’m currently a doctoral student in American and
Modern Jewish history at Stanford University.

While I am passionate about history, my training has
also made me acutely aware of the gap between academic
and public discourse, and I would like to explore a
career path that would allow me to bring them closer
together.

One of the most effective ways to bring historical
knowledge to a broader audience is through museum
work, and since my program does not offer formal
training in museum studies, I want to develop the
necessary curatorial and professional skills for work
in a museum or other institution with a mandate to
serve the public after I complete my PhD.

I’m about to complete my oral examinations, and plan
to move to New York City this summer to begin research
on my dissertation (topic TBA). I am in the midst of
requesting informational interviews with a slew of New
York-based organizations whose work I admire with the
hope that I might be able to arrange a part-time job
or internship next year.

My need for a mentor is particularly acute since I am
attempting to break into the field for the first time,
with many skills but without a formal background in
museum work or training.

I would appreciate the opportunity to connect with an
experienced museum professional, ideally a specialist
in public history, with whom I can develop an ongoing
relationship and rely upon as a source of advice and
feedback as I begin exploring this new career.
