I too am in the same situation. Read along scripts and/or closed captioning
is the better way to go. Sadly, our "gizmos" often suffer from feedback in
amplified situations.

I'm in much the same situation. Simple amplification often doesn't work. 
I rely heavily on closed captioning for TV, for example--it's useless 
for me to just turn up the volume. A follow-along script also would work.
