SIMMONS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
HENRY FORD MUSEUM & GREENFIELD VILLAGE
1998
Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village welcomes applications to its 1998
graduate internship program. The Simmons Internship Program is
designed for graduate students interested in pursuing careers in
history, American Studies, or related fields.
Funded by the Vera W. and Walter E. Simmons Endowment Fund, the museum
can offer interns a stipend of $1225 per month, with a maximum
internship term of 3 months.

During the Summer 1998 interns will be given the opportunity to work on
projects involving the areas of glass, art work, and decorative arts
documentation (conservation), the Thomas Edison archival collection, the
Edison Institute Archives, Fort Myers (Thomas Edison) documentation,
and clothing and textile production. Projects can range from
traditional research and cataloging projects and archival processing to
assistance with the development of educational programs for museum
visitors or to the development of interactive or educational components
for exhibits or other public programs. During the selection process,
each candidate's skills, background, and interests will be assessed
against the various projects and museum activities currently underway.
Each successful candidate will be assigned to a staff member with whom
he/she will conduct the major project.

The Simmons Internship Program provides an exceptional opportunity to
experience life in a major American history museum. Henry Ford Museum
and Greenfield Village, the largest indoor-outdoor museum in America,
has an extensive artifact collection with major holdings in American
technology, transportation, and domestic life, with the Research Center
incorporating an outstanding collection of automotive history, design
history, and advertising materials. The 81-acre Greenfield Village
site contains seventy-eight architecturally significant historical
structures. The museum's artifact and architectural conservation
facilities are some of the finest in the Midwest. In addition to their
specific project assignments, Simmons interns are encouraged to
participate in the larger life of the institution in order to gain a
fuller understanding of the many components of museum work.
