Pittsburgh's original Buhl Planetarium and Institute
of Popular Science, constructed in 1939, included the
first planetarium theater [and, perhaps, the first
theater!] with a special sound system for the
hearing-impaired.

At the rear of one section of the planetarium theater
there were ten recepticles to plug-in headsets that
would amplify the audio of the program, for
hearing-impaired visitors. Two types of headsets were
available for loan: air-conduction headsets and
bone-conduction headsets. The hearing-impaired patron
would provide a one dollar deposit for the loan of a
headset; the dollar was returned with the return of
the headset.

Although the system worked well for several years, it
no longer exists due to a very unfortunate
rehabilitation of the planetarium space for an exhibit
gallery in, what is now, a portion of the Children's
Museum of Pittsburgh.
