Mrs. Laura Bush Honors 19 Arts and Humanities Programs for Underserved Youth
Next Nomination Deadline: January 31, 2009
Washington, DC-Young people from the U.S., Mexico, China, and Egypt who engage in outstanding after-school and out-of-school arts and humanities programs were honored by Mrs. Laura Bush at a ceremony for the 2008 Coming Up Taller Awards. The ceremony was held at the White House on November 14, 2008. Click here to see a list of the 2008 awardees.
"The study of the arts and humanities gives children the chance to be extraordinary and the power to be themselves. Today, we're honoring 19 terrific programs that help young people use their creativity and their talents to succeed," Mrs. Bush said.
The Coming Up Taller Awards recognize and support outstanding community arts and humanities programs that celebrate the creativity of young people, and provide them with new learning opportunities and a chance to contribute to their communities. The awards also highlight the contributions that historians, scholars, librarians, and visual and performing artists make to families and communities by mentoring children. Each program will receive $10,000 in honor of their accomplishments in enriching the lives of young people and their communities.
Coming Up Taller, an initiative of the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities (PCAH) in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), was founded in 1998. More than 300 nominations were received by the program in 2008.
Joining Mrs. Bush in presenting the awards to participants in each program were National Museum and Library Services Board Member and Trustee of the Berger Collection Educational Trust Katherine M.B. Berger on behalf of IMLS Director Anne-Imelda M. Radice, PCAH Chairman Adair Margo, as well as representatives from the NEA, and the NEH. Special guests included the new Minister of Culture for the People's Republic of China, Cai Wu; Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt Minister Amr Ramadan; and Director General Alvaro Hegewisch of Mexico's Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (CONACULTA).
The next deadline for Coming Up Taller Awards is January 31, 2009. Nomination guidelines will be posted on www.imls.gov and www.cominguptaller.org when they become available.
