Women in the Military: A Jewish Perspective
An Exhibit Opening Friday, March 5, 1999

The National Museum of American Jewish Military History (NMAJMH) will
hold a press preview of their new exhibit, Women in the Military: A Jewish
Perspective on Friday, March 5, 1999 at 1:00 PM. It will be followed by an
Opening Reception.
As we head toward the next century, it is only logical to reflect upon
the myriad of sociopolitical changes of the past hundred years. In recent
months, the media has reminded us of the unsinkable generation of Americans
that endured the Great Depression and fought in World War II and subsequent
struggles. Sometimes underemphasized, however, are the amazing
contributions made by the women of that era. From Rosie the Riveter to
Front Line Annie, even before the accomplishments of the feminist movement,
women were transcending traditional roles in support of America's military
efforts, bravely serving their country in times of need. The NMAJMH
exhibit focuses on these female war heroes in an effort to educate the
public on the vital contributions of women to our country's safety and
well-being over the years. It not only examines the barriers these
individuals faced as women, but also those they overcame as Jews. Often
experiencing dual-bigotry, these amazing veterans epitomized true American
patriots in their willingness to fight past such obstacles to preserve
their nation and their way of life.
