Megan,

We do all of our permanent exhibit labels in english and spanish and most
of our temporary exhibit labels are also bi-lingual. We did a visitor
survey on our first large temorary exhibit and found that 20% of the
visitors read the spanish text. We are currently doing a survey of a new
section of the permanent gallery part of which will try to determine the
effectiveness of our bi-lingual presentation.

There are many problems involved with bi-lingual exhibits, but in southern
New Mexico the results seem to be worth the additional effort and cost.

If you have specific questions or concerns feel free to contact me off the
list.

I am interested in finding out about museums that have done bi-lingual
labels, either for temporary exhibits, or for their permanent exhibits. I
am especially interested in museums in the United States that have
experience with this, and might be interested in being on an advisory
committee for a new exhibit we are putting together. Please feel free to
respond to me off list - [log in to unmask]
Thank you.
