My 1790 historic house museum has a basement kitchen, half below grade,
with a brick floor, exterior door, and a big humidity problem. The upper
floors have climate control, but it doesn't help in the basement. I
recently got a dehumidifier working in the space, but, in the meantime,
all the furniture (mainly painted wood) and wooden objects have the
faintest film of mold, or mildew - looks like dust, but doesn't rub off.
How do I get rid of this? Is bleach ever acceptable in these conditions?
(the furniture operates as a teaching collection in this room, but it IS
period) Is it hopeless unless I can control the humidity? Ideas?
