We don't do anything like you were disscribing, but what a neat idea.  As
for the gifts, I think the bag of marbles and the top are an excellent idea.
My son is 8 and I won't be concerned about him choking on the marbles.
Generally speaking small parts are a concern with children 3 and under
(possibly 5 and under is some cases).  My son has had lots of toys with
small parts since he was about 4-5 (lego's for instance).  I think your
choice is fine.
