The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium, a property of the Dubuque County Historical Society in Dubuque, Iowa, is hiring two Collections Inventory Assistants for a two-year project. Please see below for more info.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title:                                                     Collections Inventory Assistant
Full-time/Part-time:                                        Full-time, two year position
Exempt/Non-Exempt:                                    Non-Exempt
Department:                                                      Curatorial
Reports To:                                                         Director of Curatorial Services
Staff Reporting To This Position:                               Volunteers as assigned
Works Closely With:                                        Collections Manager/Registrar, volunteers

Key Responsibilities





*         Assists the Collections Manager/Registrar in executing a complete inventory of the museum's historical collections. Tasks include but are not limited to:

o   Verifies or enters catalog information on each item in the collection into the database.

o   Physically locates each item in the collection. Documents or updates locations in the database.

o   Correlates all items with the correct paper and database files.  If the files do not exist, creates them.

o   Ensures all items are properly marked with accession numbers following professional museum standards and protocols.  If accession number is missing, determines the correct number and properly marks.

o   Digitally photographs or scans each item and adds images to the database.

o   Assesses condition of each item and updates condition information in the database as necessary.

o   Registers and catalogs undocumented "found in collection" items.

o   Improves storage conditions where practical.


Special Requirements



  *   Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in History, Anthropology or related field; Master's degree or Master's certificate in Museum Studies, Public History, or a related field preferred; or equivalent work experience.
  *   Must have a solid understanding of professional collections management and registration practices.
  *   Excellent computer skills.
  *   Ability to work collaboratively with the Curator, Collections Manager/Registrar, and volunteers.
  *   Preferably have knowledge of PastPerfect museum software.

*         Must have the ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 40 pounds and to climb a ladder.


This is a full time, grant funded, two-year, benefits eligible position. Benefits include vacation time, sick time, paid holidays, medical, dental, flex plan, and 403b retirement plan.
