For the past couple of years Patrick Butler has been researching and
speaking on that very topic.  He has presented his findings in an ongoing
series of talks at the Texas Association of Museums and AAM meetings.  He
can be found in Alexandria VA (office phone 703/549-0177).  He produced a
nice bibliography on the subject, which appears in the 1996 TAM annual
meeting sourcebook (pp. 191-224)
