The Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies is extending the
reservation deadline for the following workshop. Registrations accepted
until April 9, 2004. 

Preserving Historic Trees: A workshop on the specialized techniques
needed to care for aged trees in cultural landscapes.

Instructor: Charles Pepper, Deputy Director of the Olmsted Center for
Landscape Preservation, Brookline, MA.

What: This workshop will focus on the principles and practices of caring for 
older historic specimen trees in cultural landscapes. It will provide the 
opportunity to discuss the need for special conservation and arboricultural 
treatments to stabilize deterioration, maintain health, and minimize loss. 
The program will include presentations and field exercises to provide 
participants with an understanding, awareness, and skill in historic tree 
preservation and management. Topics will explore the biology of tree 
aging, the engineering and architecture of trees, stabilizing historic tree 
deterioration, pest susceptibility of older trees, soil management and 
inventorying, and replacing trees in cultural landscapes. 

This workshop qualifies for Continuing Education Hours for U of Illinois 
Extension Master Gardeners. 

Active Master Gardeners/Interns, and members of the Illinois State 
Museum receive a 10% discount.

Lodging is available at local motels and Bed and Breakfasts. Contact the

The Campbell Center is a mid-career training facility for professionals in the Historic Preservation, Collections Care, and Conservation fields. Located in Northwestern Illinois, on the campus of the former Shimer College, the Center is about 3 hours west of Chicago. Shuttle service is available.
