Hi Jan. We have a business recording oral histories (very much like
StoryCorps) and for most jobs we use fancier mikes and a Fostex field
recorder ($600), but for portability, ease of use and price, you could
hardly go wrong with the Tascam DR-05 digital , currently for $87 (at Amazon
and other places). I know you're looking for a box, but I'm not aware of
anything with decent sound quality that is cheap. To secure the DR-05, you
could maybe drill a hole and rig up a tether, and print easy instructions
for users. We wrote a blog review about it in 2011, but I think it's all
still accurate, if you're interested:

It's a great idea. In my other role as curator of our small historical
society museum, we've started to add audio clips (from my grant-funded oral
histories of town seniors) to our exhibits. So an old crank phone on display
has a 102-year-old woman who grew up in the town talking about using the
party line and who her family shared with. And a sit-down cabbage cutter
from our Farm Museum has a guy telling how he makes sauerkraut.

Good luck!

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Exhibit oral history digital recording apparatus

Greetings:

We would like to capture oral histories or memories of visitors going
through the history museum, sort of like NPRs Story Corps, but very basic.
We envision a push button box that starts the recording process and another
button to end it. Is there anything out there or ideas to build a box, and
recommendations on the type of recording system to use. FYI- This is a small
county historical museum (very little funding available) Any and all help
appreciated.

Sincerely,
Jan McCormick
