Hello all,

I've searched the archives and can't find this situation. Our museum has a
separate curation facility; at one end of the hall is a door that leads to a
highly secure and exceptionally well-maintained collections storage area. At
the other end of the hall is a room that is marked "Collections Research." My
director and some board members want to turn this room into a meeting room.
All the floors in the area are sealed concrete, appropriate in a collections
setting. However, the lack of floor covering means that voices echo
disturbingly.

To cut to the chase, I am instructed to find an area carpet to help muffle the
echos in this space. Since no artifacts are ever stored or processed in this
room, I think the main concern is that carpeting not have backing materials
that off-gas such as PVCs. Would a short-pile polyester carpet be
appropriate? What do I need to know about backing materials? Or do I not
have to worry, since there is no collections activity taking place in this room?

Thanks in advance for your advice & comments. I'm totally at a loss here!
