The Computer Museum History Center


The Computer Museum History Center is the custodian of the largest collection 
of computing artifacts in the world, and is a spin off from The Computer 
Museum in Boston.  The Mission of the History Center is to preserve, study, 
celebrate, and exhibit the history of computing.  The Museum plans to build 
an 80,000 square foot facility on two acres at Moffett Field in Mountain 
View, California to house and exhibit the collection.  The collection 
includes thousands of artifacts, films and photographs, as well as 2000 
linear feet of cataloged documentation, gigabytes of software, and the 
world's largest collection of computer hardware.  The more than 250 founders 
of the Museum rank among the best known names in the computer industry.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Executive Director has complete responsibility for operating and growing 
The Computer Museum History Center and reports to the Board of Trustees.

Projects and programs that the Board anticipates undertaking in the next five 
years are:

    1) Building a permanent home for the collection including raising the 
necessary funds, designing the facility and overseeing its construction and 
opening.
    2) Creating exhibits and public events which showcase the collection
    3) Continuing to build the collection itself.
    4) Developing relationships with other institutions such as museums and 
universities to make use of the collection.

The Executive Director will be expected to:

    1) Work with the Board to refine the vision for the History Center and to 
develop a convincing strategy for accomplishing that vision.
    2) Be able to articulate, in a compelling manner, that vision to current 
and prospective supporters.
    3) Interact comfortably with industry leaders
    4) Create a community of donors, volunteers, interested parties and staff 
which provides a feeling of     belonging to all involved.
    5) Identify and recruit unusually able people to key staff positions.
    6) Operate the Museum on a fiscally conservative basis.

Personal Characteristics

Candidates for this position should possess:
    1) Unusual ability as demonstrated by previous accomplishments.
    2) Dynamism and charisma combined with a sense of integrity.
    3) A strong drive to accomplish things.
    4) Enthusiasm for computers and computing

Useful Background

    1) Museum experience - preferably at a collecting museum.
    2) Computer Industry experience - possibly as a CEO or division manager.
    3) Fund raising experience.
    4) A graduate level education, including a technical degree.

Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
