As one of the "software people" out here who does have a pretty good idea of what museum documentation is, about I encourage everyone in the industry to take the replies to this inquiry to heart.  Never throw out your hardcopy records.

In addition; continue to create hard copies of catalog cards and other documentation. Make sure these documents are of archive quality.

Finally, backup, backup, backup.  Then, periodically archive a backup to refer back to in the case of suspected tampering or simple error.

Your collections management system should also include an internal audit trail.

This response is my own, not my companies, but I am sure my coworkers would agree, as would the good folks who work for our competitors.
