Council of American Jewish Museums Conference 2004
NEW YORK CITY

Sunday, January 25th-Tuesday, January 27th, 2004

Laura Kruger, Curator, Hebrew Union College Museum

Jill Vexler, PhD., Independent Curator and Cultural Anthropologist

Conference Co-Chairs

"Jewishness/Judaism: Definitions, Boundaries, and Perceptions"

The conference program will focus on the ways in which Jewish museums are actively engaged in defining Jewish art, ethnicity, and history, Jewish society and its diversity, and the nature of religious interpretation. The sessions will examine the tensions, boundaries and merging between the religious vs. ethnic identities of the Jewish community. How does a museum deal with this continual question about defining identity in light of the different experiences and degrees of familiarity of its visitors?
