Subject: Velvet Riding Habits?

Hi all,

I'm in a small debate on a sidesaddle list about materials used in riding
habits. While riding habits were also used for traveling costumes and made out
of many fabrics like velvet, some people are saying that women rode in their
velvet habits as well. While I think it's possible that some women might have
popped on a horse to stroll around in their velvet habit on occasion, I don't
think it was common practice and that their velvet habits were used as
traveling or walking costumes.

So does anyone have any velvet riding habits in their collection or primary
source documentation about women riding in them? I haven't done exhaustive
research but all the ones I've seen, mainly from mid-1700s on to about mid-1800
have been of wool, nankeen, or silk.

Secondly, someone else posted that there was a Regency riding habit in velvet
from the Sidesaddle museum in England. Anyone know anything about either the
musuem or the habit itself?

Thanks in advance!

Deb
