Massachusetts College of Art
Position Announcement:  Dean of Graduate and Continuing Education

The Massachusetts College of Art invites applications and nominations for
the position of Dean of the Division of Graduate and Continuing Education.
The Division houses the Masters of Fine Arts, Master of Science in Art
Education, Design Certificate and Teacher Certificate programs, the
Program of Continuing Education and Saturday and Summer Programs for
elementary and secondary students and teachers.  On and off-site course
locations are maintained.

The Massachusetts College of Art was founded in 1873 as a public college
to support economic growth.  The College continues its mission to provide
students with cutting edge skills in all areas of visual art, design and
art education, and leads the way in responding to changing technological
and design needs of area business and industry.  As the graduate and
professional arm of the College, this division provides access to high
quality graduate, professional and skill development programs and courses
to over 3500 annually.

The division has two administrative foci:  graduate and continuing
education courses and programs.  The Dean will have overall responsibility
for both areas.  The Dean is responsible for the planning, operation,
direction, and supervision of all academic programs and personnel related
to Graduate and Continuing Education.  The Dean:

        -provides academic leadership for the division including program
and faculty evaluations,
         credit and non-credit course development
        -ensures academic quality for activities on and off campus which
is consistent with standards
         held by the College as a whole
        -secures fiscal self-sufficiency for all divisional activities,
manages $2.4 million budget
        -supervises 25 full and part-time professional, clerical and
student employees and 200 part-time
         faculty
        -implements the collective bargaining agreement for graduate and
continuing education
        -reports to the Vice-President of Academic Affairs and is a member
of the Presidents
         Administrative Council

Qualifications:

 Earned masters required; terminal degree preferred
 Demonstrated active and current commitment to the arts and art education
 Ten years of progressively responsible administrative experience in a
position of organizational leadership, preferably in higher education
 Record of successful experience in program development or teaching or
studio activity in the visual arts, design or art education
 Evidence of success in directing and leading faculty and staff in
building effective programs
 Experience in being responsive to a richly diverse student body
 Evidence of entrepreneurial skill in designing programs and institutes
responsive to changing needs of business, education and industry
 Demonstrated strong budget, fiscal, planning, management and evaluation
skills as they relate to program growth and development
 Success as grants writer and manager
 Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills

Salary Commensurate with experience.  Excellent benefits package.  State
Date:  July 1, 1997
