Whoa, please don't discount volunteering as a way to get to the "who you know" point. Out of 6 museum jobs I've held, 5 started with volunteering. The one exception turned out to be a nightmare job, and I think it was partly because I didn't have a chance to get acquainted with the staff, and vice versa, first (if I had, I would have run the other way very quickly). I think volunteering is a great way to break into the museum field because you have a chance to demonstrate your abilities, get to know the museum staff (including those who make hiring decisions), and be first to apply, or simply get an offer, when a position opens.
