I seem to remember a rather difficult book to read on the subject of the
19th century practice of photographing recently deceased family members
in their finest clothing and set up in various poses as if they were
sleeping. Nothing really strange, but overall, the book itself is a bit
on the morbid side. The book was published about 1990 or so and was all
in black hardcover. I believe there was even a photo of Jesse James in
his coffin toward the end of it.

If I am able to track down the title and author/publisher, I will notify
you of it

best
