Textile Processing Internship
Historical Society of Frederick County, Maryland

The Historical Society of Frederick County, Maryland is seeking a Textile Processing Intern to work with the textile collection that consists of approximately 1500 personal artifacts. The intern should be an upper-level undergraduate, graduate or recent graduate. This is an unpaid internship; however interns can earn college credit through their college’s internship program.

The intern’s primary duties will be to inventory, catalog (data entry), re-house, and prepare and move the collection to an off-site storage facility. Recording locations and creating a general survey of the collection will be completed as well.

Ideally, the intern will have basic knowledge of the care and handling of textiles, and of historic costume in general. However, interns will receive instructions on care and handling. Applicants should be studying history, anthropology, museum studies or a related subject. Attention to detail is very important. Research, writing and computer skills are requirements. Climbing stairs and lifting 35 pounds is required. Applicant will possess the ability to work independently. Knowledge of Past Perfect Museum Software would be beneficial, but not required. The intern will be able to learn how to use this collections management software.

This internship is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in the museum field, specifically in curation, collections management and registration. Interns will gain valuable knowledge of collection handling and research. Interns with an interest in costume and clothing studies are urged to apply.

The Historical Society of Frederick County requires a minimum of 2 months of 16 hours per work week. Longer internships will be considered. Start and end dates are flexible. Intern is responsible for transportation and housing.

Please submit a cover letter and resume to Carrie Blough, Curator, at [log in to unmask] by May 25, 2012.

The Historical Society of Frederick County in an Equal Opportunity Employer.
