Wearing my appraiser hat -- don't have an appraisal undertaken until you
have your collection documented. Appraisers basically catalog a
collection as part of their appraisal report under "description of the
property." If an appraiser will use your catalog data (they can't for IRS
related jobs) you can save a bundle. Hint: ask an appraiser to reference
your catalog number with their inventory number.

Volunteer as appraiser, this raises some hair on the back of my neck.
What is this person's professional appraisal training or are they a local,
and well meaning, antique dealer? If your appraisal is for insurance,
make sure your carrier is ok with someone with a potential vested interest
in your institution providing you with your appraisal. In the current
economy begger's can't be choosers or some such baloney, but before you
spend a considerable amount of staff time on this project, make sure you
can use the work product. Sara Conklin, ISA CAPP PH: 530-836-1762
