Regarding Anne Lane's query from Karen Charatan concerning "restoration" of
the lettering of a Civil War document.

Karen Charatan's ethical concern is appropriate.  It is unethical to write
over the lettering.  If the owner wants to do it herself, it is her
prerogative, but I would not endorse or support it.   It is unfortunate, but
owners often do things unknowingly and I feel that it is part of our jobs to
educate them as to the proper way to care for, and enjoy their objects.  If
possible, the owner should be educated about conservation and "restoration".

provide information.  AIC also has a referral service to whom this owner can
be directed for information on paper conservators in her area who may (the
operative word here is "may) be able to provide appropriate treatment for the
object that will improve the legibility of the document.  In addition, the
AIC will provide referrals to conservators who will speak publically on these
issues.
