Pejepscot Historical Society, one of Maine’s oldest historical societies,
announces two three-month internships during the summer of 2004. PHS
operates two seasonal historic houses (the Skolfield-Whittier House and the
Joshua Chamberlain Museum) and the year-round Pejepscot Museum (featuring
changing exhibits and research facilities for the local history of
Brunswick, Topsham, and Harpswell) with a permanent staff of three FT, one
PT, two seasonal site managers, and 50 volunteers. Summertime attendance
typically exceeds 6,000 visitors.

Offered since 1987, the internships provide broad experience in all aspects
of museum operations: research, collection management, interpretation,
program development, publicity, administration, and merchandising. In
addition, interns will have primary charge for organizing and implementing a
project that will require up to one-half of their time. Specific goals and
objectives will be discussed during interviews.

Individuals with a background in history, art history, historic
preservation, education, library and archival science, public
administration, or museum studies are encouraged to apply. Starting and
ending dates are flexible between May 15 and September 15. This is a FT
position (37.5 hours per week), Tuesday through Friday, reporting to the
Executive Director. Alternate Saturdays are required. Compensation range
is $3,375 to $4,050 depending on experience. There are no benefits.

Application is by query letter describing interest and experience with
museums or nonprofits, a resume including the names of three references, and
official college and/or graduate school transcripts. Minimum BA degree
preferred but students about to enter their senior year of college will be
considered. Application deadline is March 31, 2004. Send to Deborah Smith,
Executive Director, Pejepscot Historical Society, 159 Park Row, Brunswick,
ME 04011.
