THIS NOTICE IS BEING CROSS-POSTED ON SEVERAL LISTS. APOLOGIES FOR
DUPLICATIONS.

RALEIGH, NC--The Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) is
pleased to announce that the recipient of its Distinguished Service Award
for 1998 is William J. Dane. This year's recipient has been cited for his
exemplary service to art librarianship in public libraries, most notably in
building enviable graphic arts collections, and for his impressive
contributions as curator, scholar, and teacher.
Mr. Dane has been with the Newark Public Library for over fifty years,
currently as Supervising Librarian for Special Collections, and before that
as Principal Art Librarian. He has been largely responsible for building
the library's collections of visual materials such as prints, photographs,
posters, and printed ephemera. His ambitious and wide-ranging exhibitions
and associated publications program at the library have been particularly
acclaimed. William (Bill) Dane is widely admired for his erudition, wit,
generosity, and professionalism. As a champion of the Newark Public
Library's art collections which he promotes through public lectures,
classes, and assistance to library users, he has won the esteem of his
professional, academic, and administrative colleagues and friends.
His energy and commitment to numerous library and art-related associations
has earned him the enthusiastic appreciation of fellow members.
ARLIS/NA is proud to welcome William J. Dane as the 10th recipient of its
highest honor: the Distinguished Service Award.
The Art Libraries Society of North America, founded in 1972, is devoted to
