The Southern Oregon Historical Society in Medford, Oregon is hosting the
western regional meeting of the Association for Living History, Farm &
Agricultural Museums from September 9 - 11, 1999. If you would like a copy

The registration fee is $70 and does not include lodging.

The session topics are:
Thursday, Sept. 9th
Pre-conference Workshop, $50
How to Make A Character of Yourself --Nancy Harms , living history
interpreter, National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, Baker
City, Oregon

Pre-conference Tour
From Fine Arts to Farm Equipment --Hands-on tour of the Southern Oregon
Historical Societyıs 10,000 sq. ft. collections storage building.

Friday, Sept. 10th
Keynote: How Best to Tell the Tale: Interpreters, Primary Research, and
Accuracy in Interpretation, Debra Reid, Eastern Illinois University.

10 - 11:30 AM - Concurrent Sessions
Do it yourself! Create replica packaging and learn a variety of graphic
techniques to make labels and signs.
Tracking Down Resources. Explore methods for researching a variety of
topics through primary and secondary resources. This session will also
discuss how to create an oral history program.
Learning Styles. Research shows that the ways we use to approach learning
affects our style of communicating, thinking, teaching, and processing
information. Discover your own learning style and how to apply it to your
work.

1 - 2:30 PM Concurrent Sessions
Working with Students. This session presents four case studies of working
with students from primary grades to college level.
Historic Clothing lecture.
Elements of Historic Furnishings. Find out how to create a furnishing plan
that works.

3:00 PM - Concurrent Sessions
3:00 - 4:00 PM
Do it yourself! The Societyıs Exhibit Dept. presents an on-site tour of how
they created and maintain the ³I.M. Sellin General History Store² in the
Childrenıs Museum in Jacksonville.

3:00 - 5:00 PM
Historical Programming for Cemeteries.  Jacksonvilleıs pioneer cemetery
will be the site for this session which explores using cemeteries in school
and adult programming. Presenters will discuss cemetery activities and
walking-tour brochures they have developed. A living history program
introduces participants to Jacksonvilleıs ³permanent² residents.

Developing and Managing a Historic Property. This on-site session explores
the many issues associated with the Societyıs Hanley Farm, a 37 acre site
with ten historic structures. Presenters will discuss land use and
legislation issues, the master plan for development, partnerships, and tour
the site discussing maintenance issues, restoration projects, and managing
the grounds and gardens.

5:00 PM
Hanley Farm. Tour the grounds and buildings before enjoying a BBQ dinner
and annual fundraising auction.

Saturday, Sept. 11th
Hands-On Workshops (choose one)
Food Preservation
Try your hand at canning a variety of fruits, pickles, and other vegetables
while learning about food preservation techniques and food safety.

Hands-On Dyeing
Try your hand at dyeing wool and cotton fibers in four dye pots of natural
(nonchemical) dyes. Participants will receive examples and recipes from all
four pots.

Basic Woodworking and Blacksmithing
Try your hand at the blacksmithıs craft by learning to make a coat hook,
dinner triangle or courting candle holder, while discussing techniques to
interpret blacksmithing to the public. Also, learn ways to safely
demonstrate fine woodworking to the public without the need for extensive
tools or space. Participants will learn how using scrapers, hand planes,
saws, and marquetry knives.

Saturday afternoon
Join us on a road trip to Crater Lake National Park, located a couple hours
drive north of Medford. We follow the scenic Rogue River to Crater Lake,
Americaıs deepest lake known for its brilliant blue color. The recently
remodeled Crater Lake Lodge is also open. We will eat dinner on the return
trip to Medford. (Dinner not included in registration fee.)
