        SYSTEMATIC DATABASE MANAGER
 
 
The Systematic Data Base Manager, coordinating with the Directors of the
Arnold Arboretum, the Harvard University Herbaria, and the Museum of
Comparative Zoology, will work closely with departmental and project staff to
plan, develop, and provide support for the institutions' botanical and
zoological collections databases.  The individual will provide strategic
planning, systems analysis and overall direction for the development and
maintenance of collection information systems in the three institutions.  The
SD Manager should have a strong background in academic and/or museum computing
with a detailed knowledge of the operation of Internet applications,
particularly client/server information systems such as Gopher and World Wide
Web.  The individual will have oversight and overall responsibility for server
systems management including high-level problem solving for the resolution of
hardware and software system failure.  The individual should have hands-on
management experience with these operating systems: MS-DOS, MS-Windows, MacOS,
SunOS 4.x, Solaris 2.x and Novell Netware 3.11.  The individual should have a
good management understanding of Novell Netware local area networks, including
the configuration of DOS and MS-Windows workstations with dual TCP/IP and IPX
protocol stacks.  The SD Manager will supervise a Microcomputer Systems
Specialist to provide technical support for and to identify the training needs
of institution staff.  The individual will communicate with and participate in
discipline and collections community collaborative projects.  Requirements:
Higher degree in computer and/or biological sciences with preference for a
Ph.D. in systematic biology, and at least five years of experience in
biological database and network management.  Send letter of application,
