Dear Tim,
I think this would be a good time for you to switch the
manner in which you label your textiles. Brass pins can easily cause
damage to textiles either by tearing delicate fabrics or by staining.
Brass pins will corrode and can cause green organo-metallic staining
on the fabric. Additionally, unfastened pins can cause damage to
handlers leading to annoying pin pricks.
I would recommend writing the accession number in indelible
ink on cotton twill tape or, alternatively, on a material such as
Hollytex (non-woven polyester fabric) or Reemay (spunbound polyester
fabric). If you use the latter two products, the number can be
sealed using a coating of dilute Acryloid B-72. The label should
then be sewn to your textile using cotton thread.

Subject: brass safety pins

Hey All,

We use small brass safety pins to attach accession number tags to textiles.
We are running low and since I inherited our supply from my predecessor, I
don't know where to buy them. Anyone out there have a source for these
pins, or a better suggestion?

Thanks,
