English Heritage is a (sort of) Civil Service employer, and they (the Civil Service that is) certainly ask for more information than is usual elsewhere in the UK. Regarding nationality, this should not be construed as a 'race' question, it's more about the need for work permits (required for non-EU citizens). FWIW, we here don't ask for date of birth or nationality, applicants only give their family name and initials, and although the standard application form includes a tick box for driving licence, it also states that you should only fill that in if the job requires driving.

Of course, since there have been so many educational changes over the last forty years, you can get a reasonable idea of someone's age by the names of their qualifications (School Leaving Certificate, 'O' Levels, 'O' Grades, Standard Grades, and so on) and by the length of time in previous employment. We don't allow people to apply for advertised posts by submitting a CV, either -- they must use the supplied application form.

That surprises me too.
