The Medicine Hat Museum and Art Gallery uses InMagic for collections
management in both it's Museum and Archives departments. Neither of
these departments has incorporated images into their respective
databases, but of course, when resources are available, we would
certainly like to do this.

I do find InMagic a bit "clunky" compared to MS Access (and I will
state outright that I am biased towards Access, as that's where I have
most of my database training and experience)--I find it takes me longer
to get the program to do what I want it to do, and it doesn't have all
the bells and whistles that Access has. Having said that, I have been
able to do just about anything I really need to do in InMagic, it just
takes time to figure out how to do (I attribute that to my lack of
familiarity with the program vs. my training on Access).

I have, however, had a complaint with some of the more recent versions
of Access with regards to working with images--on Access 2000, I
couldn't place an image directly into the database, but rather Access
would create an image "package," recording the image location, preferred
graphics editor and viewer, etc. That was fine for on-screen work, but
it wouldn't let me print out a hard-copy accession record with images,
which is what I really wanted to do, and was able to do in earlier
versions of Access. If anyone on the list can suggest something I may
have missed, I'd really appreciate hearing about it!

I know InMagic also does not place images directly into the database,
but rather records the image location (off hard drive, CD-ROM, etc), but
not having working with images in InMagic, I can't say if it manages
them more effectively than the more recent Access versions.

Cheers,

Hi all,
Does anyone use Inmagic for collection management (images in
particular).
I would appreciate your views on the advantages and disadvantages.
Off-list is fine.
Thanks
