Museum fire that destroyed priceless items deliberately lit
May 1, 2005

A fire which destroyed priceless historical books and other artefacts at a
South Australian museum was deliberately lit, police said today.

The Millicent museum, in the state's south-east, was badly damaged by a
blaze early today which caused about $400,000 damage, a police spokeswoman
said.

Horse-drawn carts, historical books and farm machinery were among items
damaged by the fire.

About 40 volunteer firefighters helped control the fire and managed to save
hundreds of other artefacts from the fire.

Fire investigators believe the blaze was deliberately lit, but had yet to
determine how it was started, police said.
