THE HUNTINGTON LIBRARY, ART COLLECTIONS, AND BOTANICAL GARDENS

EDUCATION AND VOLUNTEER SERVICES MANAGER

POSITION: Working under broad direction of the Director of Research, manages, supervises and administers education program and volunteer services.  Develops interpretive programs for visiting public, students and other constituents.  Supervises staff of two.  Manages docent program.  Oversees recruitment, training, placement and coordination of about 600 volunteers.  

Essential Functions

Education Program

Researches and determines educational program needs in consultation with relevant staff, Trustees, Overseers, volunteers and others.
Plans, develops and implements public interpretive programs including school lessons, tours for the general public, adult programs, family programs, demonstrations, lectures, workshops, film and video productions, performance programs, and other educational events.
Manages docent program including recruitment, training, scheduling and evaluation of docents.
Consults and advises on didactic material produced by the Huntington.  Such materials may include exhibition catalogs and labels, didactic panels, gallery guides, books, brochures, CD-ROMs, and videos.
Works with community groups, schools, organizations and others to increase awareness of the Huntington as an educational resource; develops collaborations and partnerships to develop and expand the Huntington's programs and audiences.
Oversees school tour program.
Develops and administers department budget; selects, hires, directs, and evaluates department staff.
Keeps current, through research and professional contacts, of new theories, methodologies, technologies and other media related to field.
Researches and develops new technologies for educational programming including film, video, electronic media, Internet applications and other media.
	
Volunteer Services Oversight
	
Researches resource needs and potential volunteer opportunities within the Huntington.  
Oversees Recruitment, orientation, training, placement, coordination, scheduling, and evaluation of volunteers.
Ensures establishment and maintenance of written policies, procedures and records (including electronic data bases) for volunteer program.
Prepares periodic reports on volunteer program activity.

Other Functions
	
May participate in exhibition and event design and development.
May schedule tours.
Answers inquiries as necessary.
Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Comprehensive knowledge of educational theory and curriculum development including museum education methodologies, evaluation techniques, and audience development.  Degree in Education, Art History, Museum Studies or related field.  Masters strongly preferred.  General knowledge of the Huntington and its programs.  Ability to plan, develop and implement interpretive education programs.  Ability to teach and train others, and to train others to teach.  Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, prepare and administer program budgets, maintain accurate records and produce timely reports.  Knowledge of principles, practices and procedures of volunteer coordination including recruitment, training, evaluation and program administration.  Strong leadership, interpersonal, planning and organizational skills.  Excellent written and oral communication skills.  Effective presentation, negotiation, problem solving and conflict resolution skills.  Office computer proficiency;  working knowledge of Microsoft Office.  Mobility to move within and between buildings spread out on 200 acre property and to move throughout the botanical gardens.  Extensive experience (5-7 years) designing and implementing educational and public programs in a museum, library or botanical gardens setting.  Professional teaching experience highly desirable.  Experience (2-3 years) supervising education staff and coordinating volunteers.

THE HUNTINGTON, located about 15 miles north-east of downtown Los Angeles, was created in 1919 as an independent private library for advanced scholarly research  in English and American history and literature, combined with public art galleries and botanical gardens.  The Huntington exhibits collections of British, Renaissance, and American art, rare books and manuscripts, and 150 acres of specialized botanical gardens.  It is consulted annually by some 1,800 scholars, toured by over 20,000 school children, visited by 500,000 members of the general public, and employs approximately 300 staff with an annual operating budget of over $13 million
