Heritage Studies Ph.D. Program

The Position:  Arkansas State University invites applications for the position of Director of the Heritage Studies Ph.D. Program to begin Fall 2002.  Heritage Studies is
a new, innovative, and multidisciplinary program designed to educate students to research, preserve, manage, and promote historical and cultural resources.
Program faculty reside in established departments representing disciplines of anthropology, folklore, geography, history, literature, public administration, and sociology.

This is a half-time administrative, half-time faculty position (appointment at rank of Associate Professor or above likely; qualified applicants eligible for tenure). The
Director of Heritage Studies reports to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Responsibilities:  The successful candidate will build and maintain a heritage studies program by developing multidisciplinary teaching and applied faculty research
using the Mississippi River Delta as a geographical laboratory.  Specific tasks include assisting faculty in developing and maintaining a research agenda; curriculum
and program development; chairing the Heritage Studies Program Advisory Council; recruiting students; advising; coordinating staffing and course offerings including
internships; teaching in the program; overseeing program staff and budget; assisting faculty and students in securing external and internal funding; and
collaborating with community and regional constituencies.

Qualifications:  Candidates must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent in a heritage studies discipline, show significant research or professional activity in heritage fields, and
give evidence of interdisciplinary teaching, research, and/or program building.  Preference will be given to candidates who have a research agenda focused on the
Mississippi River Delta region and/or have served in administrative or heritage-related positions.  University faculty and professionals in heritage tourism or museums
encouraged to apply.

The College of Arts and Sciences:  CAS has 150+ tenure-track faculty in 8 departments (Biological Sciences; Chemistry and Physics; Computer Science and
Mathematics; Criminology, Sociology, Social Work, and Geography; English and Philosophy; History; Languages; Political Science).  The college offers 45 percent of
ASU?s student credit hours and has 2000+ majors in 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including two interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs (Heritage
Studies, Environmental Sciences).

The University and Community:  Arkansas State University is the second largest university in the state and serves 10,000+ students.  Over 450 permanent faculty
reside in the colleges of Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, Business, Communications, Education, Engineering, Fine Arts, Nursing and Health Professions, and University
College.  ASU is located in Jonesboro, a city of 54,000 in the northeast corner of the state.  Memphis is an hour?s drive to the southeast and Little Rock a two-hour
drive to the southwest.

Compensation:  Salary competitive and dependent on qualifications and experience.
