I have read this newsgroup for several months and have finally decided to
post in hopes of receiving some advice from subscribers. I recently
graduated with a Masters in Anthropology with a Museum Studies emphasis
and am trying to decide what route to take in my career. I would prefer
to work in a small museum, but the only work I can seem to find is in
larger institutions. I realize that I may need to work in a large museum
until I can find employment in a small institution, but I am not sure which
area I should focus on. Since I am Native American, I have been encouraged
to work on NAGPRA projects, but I do not feel comfortable dealing with
human remains and sacred objects on a regular basis. I do have a teaching
certificate and an education background, so I have considered education,
but I really like curatorial work. Which area would best prepare me, or
more specifically, best make me marketable for a small museum? Is there
one area over another that is preferable? I know there are many of you
out there with a great deal of museum experience that probably have a
much better idea than I do! Any ideas or opions would be greatly
appreciated! I would really like to get my career started on the right
track! Thanks in advance
.
