I have recently bitten the "going back to school"
bullet and started an MA in Museum Studies by Distance
Learning with Leicester Uni.
 I guess the only piece of advice I can offer right
now (I only started in April of this year) is that if
you are intending to do your degree by Distance
Learning make full use of the services provided by the
University (Listserver, Library access, Pastoral
Tutors etc). Its hard going back to study under any
circumstances, but a DL course can make you feel
isolated as though you are working in a vacuum. The
services provided by Leicester (and I'm sure other DL
courses) help aleviate those feelings and help keep
you focused. Many of my fellow students use the
Listserver to ask others questions about essays and
subjects they are having difficulty with, and to judge
how far on others are with their study modules. That
can really help you stay focused, which is the main
difficulty with DL courses. So far I can say that the
course has been very challenging but rewarding and
enjoyable.
I realise that this doesn't really answer any of the
questions you posed but feel free to 'sponge' anytime
you like.

PS I'm not familiar with the term GRE and I'm hoping
to move to the States soon. Is this a term I should be
familiar with?
