Subject: Ex post facto accession number

My suggestion is that before you accession the objects, be sure about
the legal ownership of these objects. On the subject of the accession
numbers, this is how we do it at the National Postal Museum, Smithsonian
Institution. Irrespective of when the object came into the museum, we
use the date when it was actually accessioned. So in our system, the
object will get a number that would look like 1995.nnnn.nn. We do not
assign any "x". The details regarding acquisition, when the object
arrived in the museum, etc. will be placed in the accession files. Hope
this information helps.
