CALL FOR PROPOSALS
New York City Museum Educators Roundtable Annual Conference

Practice and Progress: The Evolution of Museum Education
Co-hosted by The Museum of Modern Art and the American Folk Art Museum
Monday, May 23, 2005

If collections are the heart of museums, what we have come to call education—the commitment to presenting objects and ideas in an informative and stimulating way—is the spirit.

		— From Museums for a New Century, American Associations of Museums, 1984

This year marks NYCMER’s 25th Anniversary, an auspicious moment to reflect on the evolution of museum education and to consider its role within the museum and in the greater community. Is museum education still the “spirit” of museums?

Over the past 25 years, many themes have emerged such as inclusion, diversity, accessibility, edutainment, and lifelong learning. Are these still relevant? How are we defining best practices for today? What is tried and true and what is worth revisiting? This conference will provide a forum to explore the current state of museum education, and to reflect on where we have come from and where we are going.

NYCMER invites proposals for sessions in either panel or workshop format that demonstrate the progress of the field. We welcome submissions from all museum education practitioners and those who contribute to the field. Sessions should allow attendees to explore, learn, participate, and share their own experiences.

Session topics should be applicable and beneficial to the work of museum educators. These include but are not limited to design for accessibility, evaluation, exhibit and program development, funding, public relations, professional development, management skills, marketing, and technology.

In keeping with this year’s theme, consider how the roots of the program or practice you are presenting shaped its current manifestation. How did you come upon the idea or program and what is its future? What unique or untapped resources have been explored? How does your program relate to other departments within the museum?

Consider the following as you prepare your proposal:

Panel presentations and hands-on workshop sessions should provide professionals at all stages of their careers with relevant applications. Sessions are expected to accommodate approximately 50 participants for a 90-minute program.

• Sessions that take the form of a panel will be held in the morning. Panels may include debate, discussion, and/or a show and tell format. Adequate time should be left for a question and answer period.

• Sessions that take the form of a workshop will be held in the afternoon. These sessions provide interactive and hands-on experiences for participants. Demonstrations, brainstorming sessions, construction projects, co-operative group work, game play, and writing exercises may be used to illustrate practice and process.
