dear kiz,

Last July "Museums Journal" had two small articles on the UK Museum
visits (pp.11, 16). I 'll quote:

"Museums and galleries saw a three per cent rise in visitors last year,
according to the British Tourist Authority's annual survey Visits to
Tourist Attractions 1996.
The rise - a reversal of 1995's downward trend - was typical of that
experienced throuhout an industry in which only country parks showed a
decline (of one per cent).

Eight of the ten most visited museums and galleries are London-based,
with the British Museum retaining the top spot with 6.2 m visits,
closely followed by the National Gallery at 5 m.

The Natural History Museum reasserted its top five status by hauling
back almost all of the 560,727 (52 per cent) visits lost during the hot
summer of 1995".

Marta.
