Barbara--when I was preparing for my graduate school language proficiency
exam, I got children's books. Since I was studying German, I read "Emil und
die Detektive"; then I found "Alice im Wunderland" (that was fun). I think
"Winnie the Pooh" also has been translated into many tongues; a friend used
it for studying Latin. Later I looked for articles in foreign journals for
my area of study, and did some translations for a professor. That was a lot
less fun, even rather ponderous at times. It took a while, but it is more
amusing than academic or commercial programs, which meant I stuck to it
better. Good luck.

Deborah Harding

Subject: Foreign language reading skills

Is anyone aware of or can recommend self-study courses or aids that focus
on improving reading skills for any of the major European languages? Most
of the products I have seen focus on speaking and conversational skills.

Thanks,
Barbara Brooker
