The Delaware Nature Society and Delaware Museum of Natural History both offer overnights. I've worked at both of these locations in the past as an overnight instructor. The museum has programs on birds, geology, astronomy, and the general Delaware area w/ a focus on water/runoff. You pick one and they have a schedule for the whole night. Its great for the real little ones because there's not too far for them to go walking-wise. If you're looking for something that doesn't require much happening in the morning after, it's a good one. Continental breakfast is served as well as snacks the night of. Kids and parents camp out on the floor under the exhibits. These programs are 1 night only-- you need to be in after the museum closes and out before the museum opens again.

The Delaware Nature Society has a lodge where Scouts stay overnight, and they can customize your program to be a mix of different subjects. You go on a night hike and an early morning hike. If your kids are really active this is a good one. Kids and parents have bunk beds. There's a kitchen in the lodge so they don't supply food but we've had parents stay back and whip up pancakes while everyone's on a hike. There's typically a second program session (or multiple) after breakfast and you can stay multiple nights.

Bronwen,

I didn't see an email signature, so couldn't reply off-list. Although we don't offer overnights, there are several museums in the Philadelphia area that do. The Franklin Institute (Philadelphia), the Battleship New Jersey (Camden, NJ - right across the river) and the Philadelphia Zoo all have (or had) overnight camping programs for Cub Scouts. We just had our overnight last month at the Franklin with Pack 97. Feel free to email me offline if you'd like to hear about the trips. [log in to unmask]

List members in the mid Atlantic region:
In my other life I am involved with a Cub Scout Pack. We always plan a spring trip, but the place we chose has been slow in responding so we are looking for alternatives and I am hoping you can offer suggestions. We are looking for an overnight experience or a trip that would include access to available campgrounds (We can and have tented, but our attendance is better if we don't have to). Our boys are 6 to 12 year olds, come with a parent and sometimes younger/older siblings. On average we get between 40 and 50 on trips. It would need to be late Friday night into Saturday or Saturday into Sunday. And we are looking at May. If your site has a program that meets the BSA requirements for achievements - particularly for our Webelos, even better, but not a deal breaker. Obviously we need to think about activity, food, and sleeping arrangements. In the past we have done the USCG Tanney in Baltimore (which the boys loved). We are in central PA, so we are looking for NY, NJ, Ohio, MD, VA, DE and PA. Any suggestions you can make would be much appreciated. Please reply off list.
